Pegasus Imaging Corporation was founded in 1991 as a reseller of fractal image compression and decompression toolkits and digital image compression applications. The company entered the imaging marketplace at a very early stage with a far-reaching vision. To satisfy customer demand for well-supported commercial image compression technologies, the company focused on optimizing standards-based compression technology for speed and quality. Pegasus was rapidly shifting from being a provider of end user utilities to marketing business-to-business solutions. A testament to the company’s technology leadership, Pegasus Imaging is the only surviving commercial supplier of JPEG compression technology in the world. Well known photo imaging customers of Pegasus JPEG today include Kodak, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Konica Minolta, and many others. The company’s strategy in the mid-1990s was to clearly differentiate Pegasus from its competition through investment in digital imaging research and development. The company’s senior scientists joined the team at this time. They are recognized throughout the industry, and provide Pegasus with a solid competitive edge. Pegasus Imaging is distinguished by its ability to deliver multiple interfaces to advanced technologies based on an extensive collection of intellectual capital, scientific research, and product innovations. Today, the company holds a portfolio of 11 patents granted, 12 patents pending, and a large amount of internal intellectual property (IP) related to imaging. Research continues and this advanced technology portfolio is integrated into the company’s suite of products. The company’s leadership in image compression technology soon earned the attention of investors. In early 1998, Pegasus Imaging Corporation was recognized as a Deloitte & Touche "Fast 500" company for its growth between 1993 and 1997. Around that time, the company acquired two companies for their successful product lines and technology. While business was good, the investment in systems integration was a detour from the original strategy of technology innovation. The investors recommended the integration division be spun off into a completely separate company. Pegasus Transtech was created and continues operations in Tampa, Florida. During 1998, management redefined the core business objectives, putting the focus back on technology innovation, and returning the company to its roots. Pegasus expanded into the specialized medical imaging industry with the PICTools Medical software development kit containing a collection of image compression technologies ideal for medical images. PICTools Medical was quickly adopted by many of the largest medical technology companies in the world, today including GE Healthcare, McKesson, Phillips Medical Systems, Siemens Medical Solutions, Toshiba, and others. The following few years brought advancements in the photo imaging and document imaging product areas, along with many key additions to the sales, marketing, and engineering teams. In an environment of fierce competition, while still a niche player, company revenue continued to grow by approximately 40% each year. By 2004, the company had outgrown its old headquarters and purchased its own building, relocating to more comfortable office space. In 2004 Pegasus Imaging acquired TMSSequoia, a company that had been a formidable competitor. The company’s forms processing technology, document image cleanup technology, and its employees, proved to be a valuable investment. The technology continues to be integrated into the Pegasus Imaging product portfolio. The company warmly calls it “Pegasizing” this highly advanced technology, and this effort continues today. On December 19th, 2008 Pegasus Imaging Corporation acquired AccuSoft's imaging business including the ImageGear and NetVue product lines. AccuSoft's powerful imaging products add significantly to Pegasus Imaging's wide portfolio of imaging solutions. The company remains privately held, profitable, and wholly employee-owned.
